The under-£500 standing-desk market has matured: dual-motor electric frames with generous lift capacities, memory presets and anti-collision are now available in the UK for a few hundred pounds. Prices below were checked on Amazon UK in September 2026, and several desks we used to recommend (the FlexiSpot E7 and E7 Pro, the IKEA BEKANT electric) are not currently listed there, so each post section names the verified Amazon alternative.
Price bands in 2026
- £100–£250: single or basic dual-motor frames, lower lift capacity, basic controllers.
- £250–£400: established dual-motor desks with memory presets, anti-collision and longer warranties.
- £400–£500: flagship budget desks with better tops and three-stage columns.
What to look for
- Dual motors over single for stability and speed.
- A lift capacity of at least 100 kg for margin and longevity.
- Memory presets and anti-collision, now standard from around £250.
- A reachable UK seller and a sensible warranty.
- A top thick enough not to sag: about 25 mm laminate or 30 mm solid wood.
1. FlexiSpot E1 Plus: best under £150
£139.99 on Amazon UK, rated 4.5 stars from 882 ratings. The lowest credible electric desk price, best for laptop-first setups with minimal peripherals. Cons: expect a simpler controller and less lift headroom than dual-motor desks.
2. Maidesite dual-motor frame: best dual-motor value
£259.99 for the frame, rated 4.7 stars from 895 ratings. A dual-motor electric frame from an established UK-available brand; you add your own top. Buy the frame and a good 25 mm top separately rather than the cheapest bundle. A newer Maidesite T2 frame is £194.99 but has far fewer ratings.
3. FlexiSpot E5 (one-piece top, 160 × 80 cm): best complete desk
£269.99, rated 4.6 stars from 33 ratings. A dual-motor, three-stage desk with a 25 mm one-piece desktop, four memory presets, an LED height display and anti-collision. Newer to the market, so fewer ratings, but it is the closest verifiable Amazon UK match to the E7 we used to recommend as best overall.
4. Desktronic HomeOne 140 × 70 cm: best all-rounder
£349.99, rated 4.7 stars from more than 3,100 ratings. A dual-motor electric desk with USB and USB-C charging, complete with top, from a UK seller. Our pick if you want a proven desk with a large body of reviews.
5. ErGear 140 × 70 cm with four memory settings: best for small spaces
£139.99, rated 4.6 stars from nearly 2,500 ratings. A compact 140 × 70 cm electric desk with four memory presets that suits tight alcoves and spare rooms at a very low price. As always at this price, expect less lift capacity and a plainer top.
6. FlexiSpot L-shape dual-motor desk: best electric L-shape
£199.99, rated 4.6 stars from 436 ratings. A four-leg, dual-motor L-shaped electric desk, an unusually cheap way to get corner space. Check the size against your room before ordering, and expect a two-person assembly.
Note: the IKEA BEKANT electric (about £420, single motor, 70 kg, no memory presets, 10-year guarantee) is sold only through IKEA, not Amazon UK. Buy it for the look and the guarantee, not the performance.
Decision tree
- Under £150, laptop-first: FlexiSpot E1 Plus.
- Dual-motor frame, bring your own top: Maidesite.
- Best complete desk: FlexiSpot E5 or Desktronic HomeOne.
- Small space: ErGear 140 × 70.
- Corner or L-shape: FlexiSpot L-shape.
Standing desks vs sit-stand converters
Converters (from about £100) make sense if you rent or want to keep an existing desk. For a new setup, a proper electric desk gives better comfort, stability and value for not much more. See our converters guide for the options.
Size guidance
- 140 × 70 cm: ideal for most home offices (27-inch monitor, laptop, notebook, coffee).
- 160 × 80 cm: dual monitors or generous workspace.
- 120 × 60 cm: only for genuinely space-constrained areas.
FAQ
How long do budget dual-motor desks last?
Dual-motor frames from established brands in the £250+ range show failure rates comparable to far more expensive desks after three to five years in UK homes, though very cheap frames are less proven.
Bamboo vs laminate tops?
Laminate functions identically but can look plasticky; bamboo passes as furniture if the desk is visible in a living space.
Is 70 kg lift capacity enough?
For a laptop and single monitor, yes. It is limiting for dual large monitors, tower PCs or heavy desk mats.
How noisy are they?
Dual-motor desks run around 48–52 dB, quieter than a dishwasher; single-motor desks are louder.
Final verdict
For most people the best standing desk under £500 is a proven dual-motor desk with a proper 25 mm top: the Desktronic HomeOne at £349.99 if you want lots of reviews, or the FlexiSpot E5 at £269.99 if you want to save. For tighter budgets, the Maidesite frame or ErGear desk offer genuine dual-motor performance, and the E1 Plus is the absolute floor.
