Everyone who works from home knows the cold-coffee problem. You make a hot drink, a call starts, an hour passes and what is left in the mug is lukewarm and sad. A mug warmer is a small heated plate that sits on your desk and keeps the drink at a pleasant temperature for as long as you need it.
This guide picks the best mug warmer options for a UK home office. We chose four, opened each one’s live Amazon UK page and checked stock, price and review standing. Every one is in stock, rated 4.3 stars or better and backed by hundreds or thousands of buyers.
What to look for in a desk mug warmer
- Heating power. Cheaper warmers use around 20W and are fine for a tea or coffee. Higher-powered models, such as 50W, heat faster and can handle thicker mugs.
- Temperature settings. Most warmers offer two to four settings. A few offer nine, which is useful if you use glass, ceramic and metal mugs.
- Auto shut-off and timer. This is the key safety feature. A warmer that switches itself off after a few hours is safer on a busy desk.
- Gravity sensor. Some warmers only heat when a mug is on the plate, so they switch off when you lift it. It saves energy and adds peace of mind.
- Flat-bottomed mugs. Warmers work best with flat, thin-based mugs. A mug with a curved or very thick base heats poorly, so check yours first.
- Surface and cable. A smooth glass or microcrystalline surface wipes clean, and a long cable gives you a choice of socket.

How much does a mug warmer cost to run?
Less than you might think. Figures assume an electricity price of 26.32p per kWh, the current Ofgem price-cap rate. A 20W warmer running for eight hours uses about 0.16kWh, which costs roughly 4p. A 50W warmer running flat out for eight hours uses about 0.4kWh, or roughly 11p, though in practice it cycles on and off and costs less.
That means even a warmer left on all working day costs pennies, and a model with a timer or gravity sensor will stop it running when you are away from the desk.
Where to put a mug warmer on your desk
Place the warmer on the side of your desk away from your mouse hand, so you are not reaching across it. Keep it clear of paperwork, laptop vents and cables, and use a socket within easy reach, as most warmers have a short lead. A heat-resistant mat underneath is a sensible extra on a wooden desk.
If your desk is small, a warmer is a good use of a corner. It takes up about the space of a coaster and a half, and it keeps a drink where you can see it, which is useful if you tend to leave mugs in the kitchen.
Are mug warmers worth it?
If you drink tea or coffee slowly, yes. A warmer costs about the same as a few takeaway coffees and saves you from reheating drinks in the microwave or pouring cold ones away. If you finish a drink in ten minutes, you probably do not need one, and a good insulated mug may suit you better.
Which mugs work best on a warmer?
A flat-bottomed ceramic mug with a thin base is the best match, because the plate can transfer heat directly. Glass and stainless steel mugs work well too, as long as the base is flat. Avoid mugs with a rim or curved foot, as they leave an air gap and heat poorly.
Do not use a warmer with an empty mug or a mug with a lid that traps steam. A warmer is meant to keep a drink warm, not bring cold water to the boil. Make the drink hot first, then set it on the plate.
Mug warmer safety tips
- Keep the warmer on a flat, stable, heat-resistant surface, away from paper and cables.
- Never leave a warmer on overnight or when you leave the house, even if it has a timer.
- Wipe spills straight away, once the plate has cooled and been unplugged.
- Do not use the warmer as a hot plate for food or to melt wax unless the maker says it is designed for that.
Which mug warmer should you buy?
For most people the Oracer is the best mug warmer, because it is simple, well proven and reasonably priced. Choose the Suewow if you want the gravity sensor and timer for peace of mind, and the Bearwind if you want fast heating from a 50W plate. The Accwork is the one to pick for fine temperature control.
Whichever you choose, you will drink more of your tea or coffee while it is hot and spend less time reheating it in the microwave.
