Headphones tossed on a desk get tangled in cables, knocked onto the floor and squashed under paperwork. A good headphone stand gives them a permanent home, protects the headband from being crushed, and clears a surprising amount of space. It is one of the cheapest upgrades you can make to a home office.

We have picked four headphone stands and hangers that suit different desks: a weighted stand for the desktop, a clamp that tucks the headphones under the desk edge, a flexible 2-in-1 option, and a sticky magnetic hook for anyone who wants to use no desk space at all. Each was opened live on Amazon UK and checked for stock, price and review standing.

What to look for in a headphone stand

  • Stand or hanger. A stand sits on the desk and shows the headphones off. A hanger clamps to the desk edge or sticks underneath, so the headphones hang out of the way and use no desk surface at all.
  • Stability. A weighted or rubber-footed base stops the stand tipping when you pull your headphones off with one hand. This matters more than looks.
  • Headband protection. Soft padding, silicone or TPU on the contact point stops the headband creasing over time. Bare metal is a poor choice for expensive headphones.
  • Height. Larger over-ear headphones need a taller stand. Around 22cm to 25cm suits most models, and gaming headsets with big earcups need the upper end.
  • Clamp range or adhesive. A clamp should fit your desk thickness, and an adhesive hook needs a clean, smooth surface to stay put.
  • Cable management. A small cable clip or notch keeps the cable from dangling, which is helpful if you use a wired headset.

Stand or hanger: which is right for your desk?

A desktop stand is the better choice if you like to see your headphones and use them many times a day. It is the quickest to grab and has the advantage of looking intentional, like a small piece of desk furniture. It does use a little desk space, usually a patch about the size of a coaster.

A clamp or adhesive hanger is better if your desk is small, if you use a monitor arm, or if you want a clean minimalist look. Hanging headphones from the underside of the desk also keeps them out of the dust, though it makes them a little less handy.

Matching a stand to your headphones

Large studio-style headphones and gaming headsets are heavier and wider than compact on-ear models, so they need a taller, better-weighted stand or a hanger rated for a decent load. Slim on-ear headphones and earbud cases can sit on almost anything, which makes the cheaper options perfectly adequate.

Think about where you take your headphones off, too. If you tend to pull them off at the end of a call and drop them on the nearest surface, put the stand exactly there, at the edge of the desk beside the keyboard. A stand that is easy to reach is a stand you will actually use.

Looking after your headphones

A stand does more than tidy up. Resting the headband on a curved pad, rather than leaving the headphones flat on the desk or in a drawer, helps the padding keep its shape and keeps the earcups from being crushed. Foam and leatherette earpads last longer when they are not squashed against hard surfaces.

Keep the headphones out of direct sunlight, and wipe the earpads from time to time with a slightly damp cloth. If you use wireless headphones, put them on the stand at the end of the day so they are easy to find and ready to charge.

Pairing a stand with good cable habits

A headphone stand works best as part of a tidy desk. Route the cable behind the stand, or use the cable clip if the model has one, so the lead is not hanging across the desk. A small cable tidy or a clip on the edge of the desk takes care of the rest, and our cable management guide shows how to make the whole desk look uncluttered.

If you use a headset with a microphone, hang it so the boom arm is not bent against the stand. A twisted boom arm wears out faster, and a pair of headphones hung by the boom is a sure way to snap it.

Which headphone stand should you buy?

For most people the Alyvisun weighted stand is the best choice, because it is stable, protective and cheap. If you prefer to keep your desk clear, the NEETTO clamp gives you flexibility, while the aceyoon is the one with the best build quality.

Choose the Lamicall if you want the headphones out of sight and are happy to stick something under the desk. Whichever you pick, giving your headphones a proper home is a small change that makes the whole desk feel calmer.
