Screens are brilliant for most things, but a whiteboard is still the quickest way to see your week. A big list of tasks on the wall, in your line of sight, does not need a notification, a login or a battery. You write, you look, you wipe. For home workers it is a cheap tool that keeps projects and deadlines honest.
This guide picks four boards for different jobs: a full-size magnetic whiteboard for the wall, a pack of magnetic planners for the filing cabinet or the side of a metal shelf, a weekly planner for tracking your week, and a glass desktop board for the notes you want right in front of you. Each was opened live on Amazon UK and checked for stock, price and review standing.
What to look for in a home-office whiteboard
- Size. A 90cm by 60cm board is big enough for a project plan or a week’s worth of tasks and still fits on most walls. A smaller A3 board suits a planner on a fridge or a metal cabinet. A desktop board should be small enough to sit between your monitor and keyboard.
- Surface. A good dry-wipe surface erases cleanly without ghosting. Cheap boards stain over time, so pick one with good reviews on long-term use.
- Magnetic or not. A magnetic board lets you pin notes and charts and use magnetic markers and erasers. Not every board needs one, but it adds flexibility.
- Frame and tray. An aluminium frame protects the edges, and a pen tray keeps markers and the eraser to hand.
- Mounting. Wall boards need fixings and a spot in sight of your desk. Think about what is behind the wall before you drill. Planners with magnets or adhesive back avoid drilling altogether.
- Accessories. Many boards come with pens, an eraser and magnets, which saves you buying them separately.

Where to put a whiteboard in a home office
Position the board where you can see it without turning your head far, ideally on the wall beside or just behind your monitor. If you use video calls, think about what the camera sees: a tidy plan on the wall behind you looks professional, but a messy one can distract from you.
A wall-mounted board needs a stud or suitable wall plugs, so check what is behind the plaster before drilling. If you rent, a magnetic planner on a metal surface or a desktop glass board avoids damaging the walls entirely.
Wall board, planner or desk board?
A large wall board is best when you manage several projects, sketch ideas or plan with other people. You can stand back, see the whole picture and move around in front of it. It does take wall space, and you need to be able to reach all of it, so think about how high you can write comfortably.
A magnetic planner is the lightweight option for people who want structure without a big installation. It sits flat on a steel surface, goes in a drawer when you need the space, and is cheap enough to replace if the surface eventually stains.
A glass desktop board is the personal option. It holds a short list at eye level, which stops tasks sliding out of mind during a busy day. Many people use one alongside a larger wall board, with the wall for the week and the desk board for the day.
Making a whiteboard a habit
The value of a whiteboard is in the daily glance, so keep it simple. Write only the week’s priorities, perhaps three big tasks and a handful of small ones, and wipe off anything you have done. A board crammed with ten days of notes becomes wallpaper.
Use different pen colours for different jobs: one for client work, one for admin and one for personal tasks. Keep a pen and an eraser in the tray at all times, because a board with a dried-out marker soon stops being used.
Take a quick photo of the board at the end of the week if you want a record. It takes seconds and saves you from recreating a plan from memory.
Which whiteboard should you buy?
For most people the Amazon Basics magnetic board is the best choice, because it is large, well made, includes the extras and costs little. If you work in a shared space, the Hivillexun three-pack lets you plan without drilling.
Pick the Smart Panda if a weekly view is all you need, and the Varhomax glass board for a small, daily list on the desk. Whichever you choose, putting your plan on the wall is a simple way to stay focused.
