The space under a desk is the most wasted storage in most home offices. Chargers, notebooks, stationery and the odd bag of cables pile up on the desktop, while a perfectly good gap sits empty a few centimetres below. An under-desk drawer or a slim rolling cabinet puts that space to work and gives the desktop back to the things you actually use.
This guide picks four options that suit different desks and budgets: a mesh pull-out drawer, a slim steel drawer on runners, a budget rolling file cabinet and a lockable three-drawer unit for people who need proper filing. Each was opened live on Amazon UK and checked for stock, price and review standing.
What to look for in under-desk storage
- Mounted drawer or rolling cabinet. A mounted drawer fixes under the desktop and uses the gap above your knees. A rolling cabinet sits on the floor and slides out when you need it. Choose by how much legroom you can spare.
- Measure first. Check the clear gap between the underside of the desk and your thighs, and the depth of the desk. A drawer that is too deep or too tall will knock your knees.
- Fixing method. Some drawers screw into the desktop, others use adhesive. Screws are stronger, but you need a desk you are happy to drill. Never screw into a glass top.
- Load rating. Stationery weighs little, but files and tech kit add up. A steel drawer rated for several kilos is more reassuring than a plastic tray.
- Runners. Smooth, ball-bearing or full-extension runners make the drawer pleasant to use and stop it sticking when it is full.
- Lock and wheels. A lock keeps paperwork private, and locking castors stop a rolling cabinet drifting away as you pull a drawer open.
The best under-desk drawers and storage
Best budget drawer: ENONCI Under Desk Metal Mesh Drawer
The ENONCI is a compact pull-out drawer in black metal mesh that measures about 35cm wide, 23cm deep and 11cm tall. It fixes under the desk with adhesive or short screws, depending on the surface, and slides out smoothly enough to reach pens, chargers and notebooks without sitting up.
The open mesh means you can see what is inside at a glance, and it costs very little for the amount of tidying it does. It is rated well by more than five hundred buyers and it is the easiest way to add a drawer to a desk that has none.
- UNDER DESK STORAGE – Add a pull-out drawer beneath the desk for stationery, cables and other small essentials, helping keep the desktop clear
- TWO INSTALLATION OPTIONS – Choose adhesive mounting or short screws to suit the desk surface and fitting method. Check the underside before installation
- PULL OUT ACCESS – The drawer slides out below the desktop, keeping frequently used items close at hand without using the desktop surface
- METAL MESH – The open mesh body keeps stored items visible, so the contents can be checked before opening the drawer
- COMPACT SIZE – Approx. 34.9 × 23.5 × 11.4 cm. Measure the available space beneath the desk and allow enough room for the drawer to extend before fitting
Best steel drawer: VIVO 13 Inch Under Desk Sliding Drawer
VIVO makes sturdy desk accessories, and this slim steel drawer is a good example. It measures around 34cm wide and 22cm deep, mounts under the desktop with the supplied hardware, and slides on quiet tracks with a neat front handle. It supports around five kilos, so it will take a stapler, a notebook and a small pile of cables with no strain.
It is more solid than the mesh option and comes with a three-year manufacturer warranty. If you want a drawer that looks like part of the desk, this is the one to buy.

Mounted drawer or rolling cabinet?
A mounted drawer is the better option when legroom is tight and the stuff you want to store is small. It keeps pens, chargers and notebooks within arm’s reach without taking any floor space. The trade-off is that it fixes to the desk, so it is harder to move if you rearrange your room.
A rolling cabinet is better for paperwork, bigger items and for anyone who rents and would rather not drill into furniture. It does take floor space, so check that it fits under the desk with room for your chair and your feet. On a standing desk that moves up and down, a rolling cabinet is also safer than a mounted drawer, because you do not have to worry about the weight of a full drawer on the frame.
Installing a drawer under the desk
Hold the drawer in place first and mark the screw holes with a pencil, checking that the drawer opens fully without hitting the desk legs or a cable tray. Pre-drill small pilot holes if the desk is chipboard, and use screws shorter than the thickness of the desktop so the tips do not poke through the top surface.
If you choose adhesive, clean the underside of the desk with isopropyl alcohol, press the drawer firmly in place and leave it for the time given in the instructions before loading it. Keep heavy items to the lower end of the drawer’s load rating, particularly with adhesive fixing.
What to keep in your under-desk storage
The best things to store in a drawer are the objects you use once or twice a day but do not need in front of you all the time: spare chargers, notebooks, a stapler, sticky notes, headphones and a few pens. Keep the items you grab constantly, such as your phone and a notebook, on the desktop or in a nearby tray.
Use small dividers or pots inside the drawer to stop everything sliding about, and do a quick tidy at the end of each week. A drawer that is half-empty is easy to use. A drawer that is full to the brim becomes another pile of clutter, only hidden.
Which under-desk storage should you buy?
For most desks, the VIVO steel drawer is the best choice, because it is solid, neat and easy to fit. If you want to spend as little as possible, the ENONCI mesh drawer gives you extra storage for the price of a sandwich lunch.
Choose the DEVAISE if you want a cheap rolling cabinet for light filing, and the SONGMICS if you need a lockable, high-capacity unit. Whichever you choose, using the space under your desk is one of the easiest ways to make a small home office feel larger.
